Salinity Meter

A salinity meter is an instrument used to quickly determine the salt concentration, or refractive index, of a saline solution by weight. It typically consists of a sensor, measuring circuitry, and a data processing unit. Salinity sensors are available in two main types: electrode-based and induction-based.

Salinity sensors are used to measure the salinity of liquids and solutions, with the capability to cover a full measurement range from 24 to 52,000 ppm (parts per million). Salinity refers to the total concentration of all non-carbonate salts dissolved in water and is typically expressed in parts per thousand (ppt), where 1 ppt equals 1,000 mg/L. Salinity is a particularly important measurement in seawater, where levels remain fairly constant at approximately 35 ppt (35,000 mg/L).
